Cardboard Camera?

 This is an Action Project for my core class Light, Sound, and Time. During this Unit, we learned all about light and how it works. We also learned about how light is a part of the visible spectrum. This is a spectrum that shows the types of waves/rays that are on earth. The visible spectrum is also how we see colors. This has also helped us better understand what light is and how we use it to take pictures. For example, when you take a picture using a camera, light is used to leave a image captured onto a surface. For this project, I was tasked with making a camera from a tissue box. The camera I made is called a Camera Obscura. This camera takes light and through a little hole pastes the image onto a piece of parchment paper inside of the camera. As you can see below, those photos were taken from inside the camera when held up to a light. It also shows what the camera looks like and how it turned how after creating it.

The process of making this camera was easy but also difficult in some parts. First we needed to find a box that was lightproof (meaning no light could get in). Then we needed to cut two holes in each side in order to see through and look at the image. Then we had to cover one hole with aluminum then poke a hole through it to make my lens. I then put a piece of parchment paper on the inside for a place where the image can print on. This process took about an hour to full complete. As you can see in the image captured from my Camera Obscura, when the light reaches the camera, it goes through the tiny hole in the lens to get to the parchment paper.

We also learned about refraction and reflection. These sound similar but are very different. Reflection is when light bounces off of certain objects whereas refraction is when it bends light through an object. During this unit, we also have been learning about equations for light and how to use them in real life. For my camera, I found the volume, height of the pinhole, and the distance between the object and the camera. In the image below, I have put together these calculations to find the total distance between the light and the pinhole. The volume of my camera is: 120 cubic inch.

This was a very fun and challenging project. I loved making the camera but it was difficult to get the right calculations for the camera. If I could go back and make the camera again I would. Mostly because I feel I could make a better one if I had more time. I also enjoyed being able to go in person to make my camera. This project has helped me better understand light and how it works.  This is a project for my core class Endurance. For this project, I spent twelve hours doing one thing. This class was all about what is endurance? We started the course by defining endurance and looking at historic people who had to. endure something for a specific amount of time. I spent time trying to figure out what you need in order to endure something for a period of time. In order to endure something, you have to be strong-willed, unbreakable, and willing to face hardship and know that it won't be fun or pleasant. So what is endurance?
