Drawing Lines

In this Action Project, we have been studying public art and how it connects to its community. We have also been making trying to define public art. I would define public art as anything that has two things. The first thing is that it has to have a story that is behind the art. The second is that it has to be in the right place to connect the community through art. In the art piece below, my classmates and I have been working on a mural for the side of a building in Lincoln Park. We have been waling around Lincoln Park and trying to figure out how we can connect the mural we are making to the neighborhood. We even went to different places like Whole Foods and interviewed different workers to see what they think is missing and what they think about the area. CJH. Lincoln Park Mural. 2019 Below is our artist statement. We (Morgan, Caden, and Nakiya’h) Sophomore, global citizens at GCE Lab School created this public mural proposal for Grossinger of Lincoln Park, to recognize the

The Hero's Journey

This is an Action Project for my core class, Stories. In this unit, I studied the Hero's Journey and how it can be related to real life. We have also been learning about the creator of the Hero's Journey, Joseph Campbell. He was an American Professor of Literature at Sarah Lawrence College. In the Hero’s Journey, there are many stages that the “Hero” goes through. The first is The Ordinary World which is the beginning of the story or the normal life of the hero. The second is The Call which is how the hero starts his journey. The third is The Meeting of the Mentor which is where the hero meets his aid or guide. The fourth is The Unknown World which is when the hero leaves his ordinary world behind to face the danger. The fifth is Trials which is when the hero faces dangers that lead him to his destination. The sixth is The Abyss which is when the hero reaches the lowest point in their journey. The seventh is The Rebirth which is when the hero pushes past his/her Abyss. Th

The Changing of Dogs.

This is an action project for mt core class POPULATION. In this project, we have been learning the difference between mutation, natural selection, variation, and evolution. A mutation is the changing of the organism on a more cellular level. Natural selection is like the survival of the fittest where the organism with the most favorable traits will be the ones to most likely survive. Variation is the change in certain genes making the organism different from the others. Evolution is the change of something for the benefit of the organism. We have been trying to incorporate this into the real world and how it can affect the animals we know today. Below is a poster showing my project and how dogs will change in the future. We have also been learning about the mean, median, and mode along with the first quartile, third quartile, and the IQR. In the poster below, I have the weight and height of each of my dogs. In conclusion, I think that the dogs that I chose will eventually learn to

The Bear, the Rabbit, and the Fox.

This is a fable for my core class STORIES. For the past few weeks, we have been reading and learning about fables. We also went to a play called The Brothers Size, at the Steppen Wolf theater. In that play, there were only three characters. Two of them were brothers and the third one was a best friend. Throughout the play they used a third-person like language, where they would tell us what they were doing, like "Oshoosi went under the car." Below is a fable about a bear, a fox, and a rabbit. They all have jobs that they need to complete but some of them won't get their share done. We all chose a moral for our fable, and if you don't know what a moral is, it is a lesson in a story that you are trying to teach. So, my moral of the story is to "get your work done." We also implemented a symbol in the story which represents something in the story. The Bear, the Rabbit, and the Fox.      One day in Bozeman, Montana, John the Bear, Jim the Rabbit, and Bill

Cooking for my school

This is a blog post for my advisory class. We were charged with creating lunch meals for my entire school. We planned different meals like Lasagna, Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup, Mac and Cheese, and Chicken. We brought in a professional Chef who had tasked us with each with a role for creating the food. personally, I was charged with cutting, spreading, and cleaning. I enjoyed this experience because I was able to learn how to prepare a good healthy meal for me and my peers. Below is me talking about what community is and what it means to me. What community means to me is when one person is alone, and many people join that one person and for years and years the family grows and it becomes a community. The GCE community is a school that has done many great things for our community. Like, gardening, cooking, cleaning, etc. To some people, a community is just your neighbors or your friends, but it consists of more than that, it consists of strangers, old friends, family, people you t

The Creation of the Universe

This is an Action Project for my core class Stories. We have been reading and telling stories to find out how to make our origin story the best that it can be. We also had a professional storyteller come into the school and tell us how to tell/write stories. I have created a fictional origin story of the universe and how it was created with the "creators" being Mewtwosaur, Venasaurus, Charizardus, and Blastoisaur. I also made an art piece that represents an important moment in my creation story. I am telling this story in the third person because this is a creation story about the creation of the universe with fictional characters. I want my readers to feel like the creation of the universe was unique and different from all of the other creation stories. CJH. Charizardus Picture. 2019 In the beginning, there was nothing but darkness. Then a huge burst of light fell from the darkness like a candle being lit by a match, and Mewtwosaur was created. The Dwarf Mongoose is Neat

This is a project from my core STEAM class POPULATION where we have learned about the taxonomy of animals and set theory. Set theory is the mathematical classification of anything. I have been researching this animal for a few weeks and went to the Lincoln Park Zoo and took a photograph of it. I also researched the taxonomy of the animal which is the information that tells you the relatives and knowledge of the animal.      The animal that I chose is the Dwarf Mongoose the scientific name is Helogale parvula. Some cool facts about this animal are that it lives in the grasslands of the Savannah and it is the smallest carnivore on the planet. It also has no major predators and can live for 10-14 years. It is also nocturnal and is a mammal.     Here, I have a photo of a Dwarf Mongoose I created a collage out of magazines and turned it into a GIF that shows each of the taxonomic levels of the taxonomy tree of the Dwarf Mongoose. Where I'm From

Welcome to my blog. This is part of an internal investigation which is discussing topics inside  the classroom whereas an external investigation is going around the city learning and  experiencing outside of the classroom.      This is a brief explanation of why I love Woodlawn which is a neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. It is also the place I have lived all my life or Where I’m From. For 15 years of my life, I have seen tragedy, miracles, and everything in between. It is also where my family was constantly judged for being one of the only white families in the neighborhood.  But I have had many great friends living there.      Many people would likely classify Woodlawn as dangerous or intimidating and in some cases, they would be right. Those cases would be gang violence, gun violence, drugs, etc.  personally I have been with friends or at home and heard gunshots or seen gang wars on the news. Kids have also been roped into gangs at a young age an
